Guide to diamond painting

Diamond painting, also known as diamond art or 5D painting, is a form of mosaic art that involves placing small resin rhinestones, known as “diamonds,” onto a color-coded adhesive canvas. Each diamond corresponds to a symbol on the canvas. All together, they create a stunning, vibrant image,

The history

This artform can trace its roots back to the paint-by-numbers that became popular in the 1950s.

However, it wasn’t until recent years that diamond painting emerged as a distinct and widely beloved craft. The trend started in China,  and then quickly spread. It has become popular with crafters and art enthusiasts for its unique blend of creativity and mindfulness.

Getting Started

What you need: People usually start by buying a diamond painting kit. These kits usually include a canvas, diamonds, a stylus, a tray, and wax.

There are lots of kits you can find online. Most are for kids or teens.

As you can imagine, the kits will differ if they are for kids or adults. Think of coloring books for adults. Similarly, there are diamond painting kits for adults, too. Their designs might be of nature patterns or replicas of famous images.

Don’t get a cheap kit unless you’re making this with kids as a craft activity. This is because you want a kit that comes with quality diamonds.

And, remember, you can always design your own canvas. As a painter, you might enjoy creating your very own diamond painting canvas with your own design. You just need to design a canvas with numbered areas corresponding to the diamonds’ colors.

Don’t be afraid to be creative with your diamond art painting.

Step by Step: How to Diamond Paint

  1. First, lay out your canvas, diamonds, stylus, tray, and wax on a clean surface.
  2. Next, pour the diamonds into the tray. Some people prefer to organize the colored resin diamonds according to the symbol chart on the canvas. This is similar to how oil painters sometimes arrange and mix colors on their palettes in such a way to loosely correlate with the scene they will paint. It is like making a rough color sketch of your draft painting, on the palette before placing the pigment on the final painting.
  3. Then, use the stylus to pick up the diamonds.
  4. Dip the diamond tip in wax.
  5. Finally, place the diamonds on the adhesive canvas. The wax will act as glue.

Techniques and Tips

Start from the Bottom

It’s generally recommended to begin from the bottom of the canvas and work your way up. This prevents accidentally smudging the diamonds or placing your hand on completed sections.

Use Straightened Diamonds

Sometimes the diamonds may become misshapen due to packaging or transportation. You can use a tweezer or your stylus to straighten them out before placing them on the canvas.

Work in Sections

Large diamond painting projects can be overwhelming. To stay organized and motivated, work in smaller sections, completing one area before moving on to the next.

Seal Your Finished Artwork

Once you’ve completed your diamond painting masterpiece, consider using a sealant or a clear protective film to preserve the diamonds and ensure long-lasting beauty.
